Kelli Evans Taylor - Community Hero
Kelli Evans Taylor- nominated by Margaret Evans, who tells us that Keli last year began a Produce Program to help out our area's Senior Citizens.
Kelli growas a 10k sq ft garden and helps with two local produce stands who donate produce. Kelli then bags and delivers the produce to 57 Senior Citizens every week, who are all so appreciative because they are either on a fixed income or can't drive or both.

Melody Bowen- Our Community Hero
Nominated by Donna Seizemore, who is 11 year old Melody Bowen's aunt. Donna tells us that her neice recently took her birthday money and bought water, food and a blanket and gave it to one of the homeless people that stands on the corner of Tharp and Colusa. While she could have bought something for herself, she used the money to help someone less fortunate. Donna says "Toe me this is really reaching out to the community in which you live".

Olivehurst Elementary School- Community Hero
Nominated by Angie Harryman, Miss Brooke, Mrs. Bates and indeed the entire stadd at Olivehurst Elementary School.
Angie tells us her oldest son has Aspergers Syndrome and that without Miss Brooke and the time she put in for Angie's son for the 2 years he has attended Olivehurst Elementary, Angies says she doesn't believe ter son would have become the child he has, let alone advancing to the 4th Grade with Miss Brooke's devotion. And, Mrs Bates, according to Angie went above and beyond anything required of a teacher, adding that the whole staff at Olivehurst Elementary has made her son's life better by carying for her son as one of their own.

Community Hero- Leno Mota
Nominated by his daughter Angel Mota, Leno is a volunteer firfighter with the Marysville Fire Department. Leno, who is a immigrant from Mexico, started working as a fruit packer when he first came to the United States.
Later he would work his way to becoming a fireman in Contra Costa. Until reaching the fire service, Leno had little no english in his vocabulary. He fought hhis way to the top and now has a well paying job and works with the muscular dystrophy association to help find a cure.

Community Hero: United States Post Office
Nominated by Jennifer Adams at the St John's Episcopal Church in Marysville, who tells us they would like to send out a big THANK YOU to the United States Post Office, their employees and everyone in the community who donated food to the U.S. Post Offices Food Drive.
It filled three Food Banks shelves in our area including theirs that helps out those in need.

The area High Schoolers awarded the annual scholarships from the Bloodsources.
The awardees participated on school blood drivve committees maintained at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average and submitted an essay detailing the reasons for their participation.

A Couple Local Heroes Need Our Help
Sierra Central Credit Union is accepting donations for 50 yr old David Lewis, the off duty Sanchez Towin employee and father of two whose leg was severed in an accident last week, after Lewis stopped to help a driver who had ran out of gas.

Also, the Beale Liaison Group is seeking donations to purchase a personal transport system for former Beale Airman Colton Reed who lost both legs folowing errors during what was supposed to be a routine gall bladder surgery at Traivs Air Force Base.

Michael Hyett Jr- Our Commmunity Hero
Nominated by his wife Satah. Michael is a vounteer fire fighter in Berry Creek beginning in 2005. His volunteer work resulted in both state and federal agencies persuing him as a full time paid foresty engineer.
in addition to his paid full time 60-hour weeks, Michael remains on volunteer call 24/7. But Sarah says the story that perhaps best illustrates his heroic nature was the time recently he came upon an injured hawk-unable to fly. Michael was able to capture the hawk with his jacket and transport it to an emergency vet. Unfortunately, Carhart didn't survive. But it wasn't fo the lack of effort by Michael Hyett Jr- this week's community hero!

The Community Hero
The Marysville Kiwanis Club involved in or community with events for kids such as the "Fishing Derby" held every year for the past 50 years . Also have a program called BUGS, which is Bringing Up Grades Students.
The Kiwanis supports the Salvation Army, Relay for Life, Shriner's Hospital, Coats for Kids, Operation Warm Heart, Casa de Esperanza, Bok kai Parade, Disabled Vets and the Marysville and Lindhurst Grad nights.
Kiwanis is a volunteer organization changing the world through service to children and communiies.

Bailey and Chloie DeMarino our Community Heros
Nominated by their mother, Kris Demarino, Bailey and Chloie recently saved their little brother TJ from what could have been a tragic accident.
When cutting wood in a friend's orchard, LJ fell into some hot coals in an old burn pile. Without thinking, they quickly reacted and pulled him out getting a few small burns in the process. Although LJ sustained 2nd degree burns and may need surgeries it could have been so much worse.
They deserve to be recognized as Hero's because of their quick thinking selfless act of saving their little brother without regard to their own safety.

Pearl Harbor Survivor Association Community Hero
The members of our local Chapter of The Pearl harbor Survivors Association. Those who were able and the members are sadly dwindling each year, participated in an observance of the attach in a Monday Morning ceremony Dec. 7th at the Butte County Fairgrounds.
Although they loved through honor 68 years ago their recollections are as vivid as yesterday. Their courage and service should never be forgotten. As survivor Art Rodda points out "Our motto was remember Pearl Harbor. Keep alert. But I guess we didn't do it. Look what Happened 9/11"

Claudia Hollis our Community Hero
Claudia Hollis, the Marysville Branch Manager for FREED Center For Independent Living a support and advocacy organization for people of all ages with disabilities.
She does an excellent job of networking, educating and enlightening local county officials about issues relating to people with disabilities.
FREED covers 5 counties and supported by grants and local fund raising which has become more difficult to obtain due to the economic crisis.
However Claudia and her staff continue to strive for equality and accesibility for everyone in our community.

Tracy & Christopher Green- Our Community Hero
Nominated by their daughter Alexandria, Tracy & Christopher becaome certified foster parents while stationed at Beale Air Force Base and are curently parent to 9 chilfren from 3 to 17yrs old.
In addition, her mother watches her Aunt Trisha's kids while she works and refuses to take money from anyone who asks to help her out.
Alexandria adds that her parents do not even get the gratitude they deserve and hopes we'll give them some by making them our Community Hero!

Marysville Officers, our Community Hero's
Marysville officers Jason Garringer, Randy Breceda, reserve officers Jarrod Tomlnson and Matt Minton were nominated by Sgt. John Osbourne and the Department's Award Committe for a couplw of life saving incidents.
Officer Minton has earned the Medal of Honor, who last month saved a drowning burglary suspect and wanted parole who tried to escape capture by swimming across Ellis Lake.
Officers Garringer, Breceda and Tomlinson have earned Life Saving Awards for pulling a woman to saftety from the guard rail of the E St Bridge after she threatened to jump.

Community Hero FFA National Honors
Jason Fergusson and Adam Murphy who represented Sutter High School, Sutter County and California at the 82nd FFA National Convention in Indianapolis of the almost 510,000 FFA members nationwide.
Jason & Adam were 2 of the only 3,000 to recieve the American FFA degree- the highest degree any FFA member can recieve.
Jason is majorung in Ag Education at Chico St with a mino in Math. Adam works in the fieldof Ag Business distributting machinery

Yuba City Fire Department our Community Hero
Nominated by Noah Wolf who tellsus that early in September his grandmothers house burned down.
Carla Gaines was unconscious in her room, the home fully engulfed in flames and Yuba City Firefighters managed to make it through the fire and into her room without even knowing for sure that she was in there.
They were able to save her life and although Carla suffered 3rd degree burns and is undergoing a 2nd set of skin grafts, her grandson Noah says she is going to be just fine.

Colleen Vantress Community Hero
Colleen will earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award possible in girl scouting and is the only girl in the Yuba-Sutter area that will recieve this award this year.
Colleen has participated in a mentoring program for younger children, has put on programs and volunteered at many elder homes in the Yuba Sutter Area.
Colleen also planned a Christmas party and vaiey of activities for foster children in our community. Colleen is described by her Troop Leader Tara Krohn as "A very rare teenager, her concern is about her community...rather than being self centered".
Firefighters Throughout The State
The 1600 firefighers from throughout the State who worked for almost 2 weeks to contain and douse the Yuba Fire near Dobbins, get this week's Community Hero Award.
Nominated by too many to mention, we all, always owe never-ending thanks and eternal gratitude to the firefighters who everyday risk life, limb and comfort to save our properties and wildlands.
One occupied home was destroyed by the flames. While Deborah and Miguel Vazquez and their 3 dogs survived, the couple lost everything. Please do what you can do to help.

Live Oak Child Care Center and People of District 10
Jenny G of Live Oak nominated our community, specifically the people at the Live Oak Church of the Brethren and the Live Oak Child Care center where Jenny G works, had helped her and her family in their time of need
Two particular families in District 10, Mai and Stan who gave their home to Jenny G for three weeks and Cleo who gave his houseboat as a place to say, helped Jenny G and her family put the pieces back together.

Oroville Boy Scouts Sunny 101.5 Community Hero
Everette Raschka amd Trevor Hardwick , who are both members of Boy Scout Troop 130 in Oroville, while on a recent scouting adventure in Yosemite came across a woman who had wandered off the main trail and broke her ankle.
Without hesitation the two scouts used a short piece of rope, two long sleve sweatshirts and two downed tree limbs to fashion a stretcher to carry the woman over 6 miles for help.
However, soon the scouts were informed by a ranger that tey would not be able to evacuate the vitctim by nightfall and would have to spend the night on the trail. Thinking only of the victim, the determined scouts delivered the injured hiker to waiting rangers before darkness.

Several months agao, vandals damaged the 2 fiberglass dalmatians that have been long-ime sentries and guardians to the Yuba City Fire Department Headquarters on Clark Ave.
Enter the good people at Golden Valley Auto Body, who donating the job, even reinforcing the dalmatians and hopefully reduce further future potential damage by vandals.
